As we celebrate Singapore’s 61st National Day, we pause to reflect on a national journey that is nothing short of extraordinary. The theme for National Day this year, “Majulah Singapura, Go Beyond!”, beautifully captures our Singapore Spirit and our shared aspiration to keep moving forward with resilience and faith. Beyond economic growth, this theme calls on each of us to do better for our nation—to care deeply for one another, strengthen our social fabric, and bless our wider community through acts of love and service.
As Christians, our national celebration begins with profound gratitude to Almighty God. We give thanks for our nation—a tiny island state with no natural resources of its own. We thank God for visionary founding leaders and a capable, dedicated government that transformed Singapore from a struggling third-world developing nation into a flourishing first-world country. Everywhere we look, the tangible signs of God’s common grace are evident. We enjoy clean, safe drinking water straight from our taps. Singapore boasts world-class airport and seaport infrastructure that seamlessly connects our small island to the global community. We hold one of the most powerful passports in the world, allowing us to travel freely to over 190 countries without a visa. Yet, every time we return home from a holiday or business trip, we are warmly reminded that Singapore remains a truly special and secure place to belong. We are abundantly blessed with physical safety and political stability. We enjoy year-round sunshine, are mercifully spared from devastating natural disasters like earthquakes and typhoons, and benefit from steady governance that plans effectively for future generations. Furthermore, we thank God for a strong and stable Singapore dollar, which enables us to stretch our financial resources—whether we are caring for our families, traveling abroad, or funding vital gospel missions across our region.
Our Biblical Duty: Praying for Our Leaders In the midst of our celebration, God’s Word reminds us of our primary civic and spiritual responsibility toward our country: “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” — 1 Timothy 2:1–2/. Praying for our national leaders is not optional; it is an essential aspect of our Christian calling. By lifting them up consistently in prayer, we ask God to grant them wisdom, moral courage, and discernment in their decision-making. We pray that they will govern with righteousness, fairness, and unyielding integrity. Good governance fosters social harmony, economic security, and genuine peace across our society.
Advancing the Gospel in Times of Peace. Crucially, the peace and freedom we enjoy in Singapore are not meant to be taken for granted or used solely for personal comfort. Peace creates an open door for gospel work. As we look to the future, here are three practical ways we can partner together to advance the kingdom of God:
- Earnestly Pray for Gospel Work. In 2 Thessalonians 3:1, the Apostle Paul requests: “Pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you.” We must pray regularly for pastors, evangelists, and ministry workers so that the gospel goes forth with power. There is an urgency to share Christ while doors remain open, and we must pray for spiritual boldness and perseverance when facing indifference or opposition. 2. Pray for and Reach Out to Unsaved Loved Ones. Evangelism begins with intentional, loving relationships. Take time to share regular meals with pre-believing family members, colleagues, and neighbors. Build authentic, unconditional friendships. Be attentive to their practical and emotional needs, offering a listening ear and a helping hand. As the Holy Spirit opens opportunities, share your personal testimony and invite them to church services or cell groups. 3. Live Exemplary Christian Lives. Our daily conduct speaks loudly before we even open our mouths. Let us guard our speech, display honesty in our workplaces, and reflect Christlike love in our homes. When non-believers witness our integrity and kindness, their hearts become far more open to the truth of the gospel.
Moving Forward in Faith. Echoing this year’s theme, “Majulah Singapura, Go Beyond!”, let us go beyond our comfort zones and be intentional about advancing God’s kingdom. On this National Day, let us thank God for His immense goodness over the past 61 years, pray faithfully for our leaders, and dedicate our peace and prosperity to bearing witness to Jesus Christ.
