Walking In God’s Will

There are so many decisions we need to make in life. Some are not critical, like, “What shall I eat today for lunch?” Some, however, can bring good or destruction for the next 20 years. You never know. How frightening! But we are not afraid of making decisions because God’s children, that is, Christians, are able to make decisions that can bring blessings.

The reasons are, first, we have a God who knows and controls the future (Rom 8:28). He, thus, is able to guide us to make decisions that are safe and blessed. Second, this same God also loves us with an everlasting love and infinitely (Jer 31:3), and is hence willing to guide us in safe and blessed paths of life. Praise and thank the Lord! We, Christians, are so special and blessed. Whatever may happen tomorrow, good or bad, tumultuous or peaceful, we are not afraid because “if God is for us, who can be against us?” (Rom 8:31). Nothing can hurt us. But to walk in God’s safe and blessed path, we need to follow God’s direction:

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;

6 In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight (Proverbs 3:5-6).

There are several critical rules you must obey if you hope to walk in God’s way. First, “trust in the Lord with all your heart”: you must believe that when God tells you to walk in a particular path, walk in that path! Second, “lean not on your own understanding”: do not say in your heart: but God’s way does not look practical; God’s way seem disadvantageous; the way that other people tell me seems more practical; my thinking looks more advantageous. If you think this way, you are doing what God’s Word is telling you not to do: “Do not lean on your own understanding.” God will be right and you will be wrong: because God knows the future but you do not. You do not know better.

What is God’s will or way? The way that God wants you to walk will always be the one that brings the greatest spiritual benefit. God will never ask you to do something that goes against the Bible’s teachings. Thus, God will never ask you to take up a job that will put you in danger of spiritual deterioration.   As a general rule, we do not change unless we are sure that change is God’s will and is sure to bring us great spiritual benefit. If we have no good and reliable reasons to believe a change will bring us great spiritual benefit and that it is God’s will, we should not change our present course of life. If you are unsure, stay put. Don’t move. Don’t move. Don’t move. But the most important thing you must do, repeat, the most important thing you must do is to be determined to submit to God’s will:

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is– His good, pleasing and perfect will (Rom 12:1-2).

You must be sincerely willing to “offer your bodies as a living sacrifice,” that is, no matter how it does not make sense to you, if it is God’s will, you will submit to God’s will. Only then will you be able to “test and approve what God’s will is,” that is, know the will of God for that decision you need to make. Thus, do not rely on your wisdom. Have a submissive heart.
