“Come follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people” (Matt 4:19). You need to be following Jesus if you hope to bring eternal life to people around you. The act of “following” requires you to put Jesus first in your life. Jesus said the same thing on another occasion: “Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds” (John 12:24). If you die to self, then your life will produce eternal life in many people. Just as you must empty totally a cup before you can fill it fully with orange juice, you need to empty yourself of self-centeredness before God can fill you with His abundant life.
First, you will enjoy abundant life. Christians should be the most joyful people because they have eternal life in them. Then why are some Christians so unhappy? Dear child of God, you can live life joyfully. If you are not, it could be that the “I” in you is the king of your life. You have kicked Jesus off the throne of your life. A self-centered person who does not put the Lord first in life will never be happy. But who is the person who really puts Jesus first in life, that is, who really loves the Lord Jesus? Jesus says: “Whoever has My commands and obeys them is the one who loves Me. The one who loves Me will be loved by My Father and I too will love them and show Myself to them” (John 14:21). If Jesus is indeed the Lord of your life, obey Him.
Second, if you die to self, Jesus can fill you with life so much so that you overflow with life. Then, you can bring to others eternal life and also be an encouragement to needy Christians. The comfort of God will flow to them through you. The eternal life of God will flow to others through you. But you must first put away your self-interest, self-pride and put Jesus above all things and all people. Nothing and no one should occupy this first place in your heart.
As the gospel rally draws closer, do several things if you hope to be used by God to lead people to the Lord and salvation. First, “those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work” (2Tim 2:21). Put away the self that loves sin.
Second, put away the lazy self. Work hard to save souls. Spend much and unhurried time praying. Prayer moves mountains and hardened hearts. You must spend much time praying. Take extra effort to care for the person whom you hope to invite. If you do not love a person sincerely, he cannot feel God‘s love and will not be interested in the Lord Jesus. Then, take up courage and invite him. May the Lord use you to transmit eternal life.
