A Better Home

After a stressful day of handling work related problems including navigating through complex human relationships, where would you look forward to going?  Some visit pubs (don’t!) while some look up good friends to pour out our grievances.  Many, like me, will think of returning home not because it is the most physically comfortable place but because this is where we can talk to people who love us unconditionally—our spouses, parents, siblings or grandparents.  We think of home because there is love, security and peace at home.  But our home on earth does not last forever because people go away—our siblings get married to set up a new family or some leave home for better work opportunities.  People also go away at death.  As much as our home is the best place on earth, it is not forever.

Hence, Christians are a blessed people.  The moment you receive Jesus as your Saviour, He gives to you eternal life.  He also prepares a home in heaven for you.  Death is a frightening event that all have to face one day.  But for Christians, it is a blessed day because it opens the door to heaven.  The Bible tells us that

We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.  (2 Cor 5:8)

If I go living in the body, this will mean fruitful labour for me.  Yet what I shall choose?  I do not know!  I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. (Phil 1:22-23)

The moment we depart from this world, we enter immediately into the presence of our Lord Jesus where we will enjoy sweet fellowship with our Saviour for all eternity.  This world is not our home.  Our homes on earth are temporal.  Thank God that we have a far better home to look forward to:

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look!  God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.  He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”  He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” (Rev 21:3-5)

We surely will one day return to our eternal home.  Our Heavenly Father will be with us for eternity.  There will be no more sorrow forever but eternal joy.

Are you going through difficult times?  Perhaps you have little to look forward to in the future that can make you happy.  Be comforted!  The future is bright for you as the apostle Paul once said (Phil 4:11-13)

For I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.  I know what it is to be in need and I know what it is have plenty.  I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.  I can do all things through Him who gives me strength.

Above all, you have a far better home, heaven, where your Heavenly Father awaits your return.  Hence, press on with life because you are not home yet.
