The Power of Prayer

Life is hectic living in the 21st century, when we are so caught up with our career, studies, family and the fast pace of technology and social media. Oftentimes, we miss out the most important things in life. We begin our day hurriedly and go through the motion of performing our mundane tasks for the day. We are so tired out at the end of each stressful day.

Many are anxious about their livelihood and whether they would still have a job in the ever-changing landscape. Many are anxious about their children, how our children would perform academically and how they would turn out. Many spend sleepless nights thinking about finance, family and career. We are easily defeated and overwhelmed by the issues in life. We struggle with our Christian life and sin, and also feel defeated by our fiercest enemy, Satan.

God has given us a very powerful means to overcome our fear, doubt and defeat in our Christian life—the privilege of prayer. Prayer comforts those who are anxious or sinking into the depths of depression.

The key to the power of prayer lies with Jesus Christ and His promise to his disciples as recorded for us in Matthew 18:18-20. Jesus tells us about the power of prayer when He said, “Truly, I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, truly I tell you that if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

As is said by Heather Riggleman “There are dozens of real-life accounts in the Bible where Jesus and other disciples prayed for. God shut heaven and prevented rain from falling for three years at Elijah’s request. He parted the Red Sea for Moses to lead His people through. He cast out demons; Jesus healed the sick and gave sight to the blind, and, on more than one occasion, raised people from the dead, like Lazarus.”

The Lord God Almighty can do all things. There is nothing impossible for Him. The character and heart of God is the very fabric of the gospel. When we close our eyes and get on our knees in prayer, the spirit of God whispers, “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?” It is as if to say to our hearts—no need is too great or small.

Each of us who is a born-again believer has the privilege of prayer. The power of prayer lies in the power of our God. God encourages and wants us to come to him in prayer. He wants us to tap into His power to meet our daily needs and deliver us from fear doubt and anxiety. Hebrews 4:16 says, “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” We have been given access to the very throne of God through prayer. Let us not miss the opportunity to make our needs known to God, and for Him to promise that He will supply all our needs according to His purpose.

Every Tuesday, we meet as a church to pray. We pray for the needs of God’s people ranging from health, career, studies, missionaries and church ministries. We bring before the throne of grace the salvation needs of our loved ones. The power of our pulpit messages, ministries and meeting the needs of every individual lie with the power of prayer. We have heard testimonies of how our God has worked wonders in answering our prayers.

Let us learn the power of prayer. We have the Almighty God who is able and more than willing to help us in the hour of our great needs. Be still and know that we have a God who is Almighty. Come in quietness to enjoy the fellowship with God our heavenly Father. Grow our faith to trust and have faith to believe in our God who hears and answers our prayer. We cannot surely miss out the power of prayer. So, come daily before God’s throne to tap into the power of God. It is He who promises us that He will supply all our needs according to His riches in Christ Jesus. As the apostle Paul says in Philippians 4:19, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.”
