Facing Difficult Times

Some weeks ago, the Straits Times reported that a Primary 5 school boy committed suicide when he did not meet the expectations of his mother.  The boy scored 50, 20.5, 53.8, and 12 marks out of 100 respectively for his English, Mathematics, Chinese and Higher Chinese.  Earlier, the boy lied to the mother that he had gotten an average of 70 marks for his examinations.  The mother was heart-broken.  Life is full of dangers and worries.

Dear students and adults, God is able and is willing to solve every problem that we face in the world: “As for me, I call to God, and the LORD saves me” (Psalm 55:16).  Are you facing difficulties in your studies, or worried about your future?  “What if I do not do well in my coming examinations?  “Will I be able to go to a good school or a good course?”  Perhaps you are facing a problem so big that you think it’s impossible to remove.  It is scary when you have to face it all alone.  But you are not alone.  You need not be afraid.  The God, your Lord Jesus Christ in whom you trust will not fail you.  He may not give you what you think is the best.  But you can be absolutely sure that whatever happens, even if what you fear happens, your Saviour will turn the unfortunate events to your advantage, even failures, bankruptcy, illness, or the worst nightmare.  God who keeps promises to His children, and that means you, promises you: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).  The final result may not be 100 marks or your financial debts being cleared.  Rather, you will get what is best for your life.  Why are we so sure that we will get the best?  God knows you need evidence and assurance.  This is the evidence: “He [God] who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32).  In other words, since God even gave you the thing that is most precious to Him, that is, Jesus Christ, He will not hesitate to give you “all things.”  Your duty, whether as a student or adult, is to walk faithfully before Him.  Walking faithfully before Him does not mean just serving in church.  Rather, it means you fulfil your responsibilities faithfully: fervent in serving the Lord in church, studying hard in your school work, loving your parents and family at home, and being a useful citizen and fellow friend to people around you.  When you are faithful, the Lord Jesus promises you:

His master replied, “Well done, good and faithful servant!  You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.  Come and share your master’s happiness!” (Matt. 25:23)

When you are faithful in small things, even things you think are not related to what you think will solve your problems, the Lord will, when the time is right, give you great and important things to do.  You will succeed in life.

Dear all, difficulties and challenges are a natural part of life.  They can be very scary.  But you are not alone.  Jesus, this almighty God, is your Guide and Provider.  Have faith in Him.  He will take care of you now and your future.  For that reason, no matter how dark the times are now, there will be sunshine and joy again.  Press on.  Be faithful in whatever you are tasked to do.  Trust Him.  Pray always.  Sleep and eat well.  All is well.
