When Is New Year Really New?

During the Chinese Lunar New Year season, we would put on new clothes. Some still practise the tradition of pasting the Chinese character, “blessing” on the door, our rice container, or even toilet doors. We would also greet each other, for example, “Happy New Year,” meaning that the person who receives the wishes would have a year that is filled with joy and blessing. In other words, the year is new when the year ahead will be blessed.

We also know, however, that blessings are hard to come by. Our sincere wishes cannot guarantee a “new,” that is, a blessed year. The Bible says, “every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights” (1:17a). Only God’s blessings bring you true joy: “The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, without painful toil for it” (Prov 10:22). Other joys, even if you obtain them, will bring you sorrow and not benefit you. The Lord, however, is willing to bless you richly: “Praise be to the God and Father or your Lord Jesus Christ who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ” (Eph 1:3). This verse tells us three important things about blessing.

First, you can only be blessed “in Christ,” that is, through the help of Jesus Christ. Why? The reason is “all have sinned” (Rom 3:23). Sin cuts away God’s blessing from you. God hates the sins we commit but he loves you for who you are, rich or poor, good looking or not. Thank God that Jesus has died on the cross. He was punished for your sins. He can forgive you of all your sins if you believe in Jesus as your Saviour. He is like a bridge between you and God. Accept Jesus as your Saviour. Then you will receive God’s blessings. Dear Christian, love your Lord Jesus wholeheartedly. Do not love the world and its sinful things. Put the Lord Jesus first in your life. Give him your heart.

Second, the Bible says that God is willing not only to give you Jesus, he is willing to give you all good things: “He who did not spare his own Son [Jesus] but gave him up for us all, how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (Rom 8:32).

Third, but what is the best gift? It is “spiritual.” Here it refers especially to the gift of eternal life, which is eternal, wholesome, and complete. What can be more important than eternal life? Money or health are important. But no matter how rich or how healthy you are now, all good things of the world will end at death. The most frightening fact is, after death there is judgment: “Just as people are destined to die once and after that to face judgment” (Heb 9:27). The sins we commit in thought, word, and deed will be exposed and judged by the Almighty God in the final judgment. We will not pass this judgment. The so called “good things” that we do in this life cannot save us because they are dirty before God. But thank and praise God. Jesus has died to save you from condemnation due to your sins. Believe in Jesus today. Jesus can wash away all your sins and make you whiter than snow. Then you can receive the best gift: eternal life. Dear friends, everyone must enter eternity. At death, your place in eternity, heaven or hell, is decided forever. Come to Jesus today. Then you will receive the most important blessing: eternal life and heaven. Then the new year is truly new because you will no longer fear death or even sufferings in this world. Jesus will take care of you forever.

Dear child of God, the best blessings are spiritual because they are most wholesome. Do not let the love of the world rob you of what is true blessings: the Lord’s presence, strength, and eternal goodness. Only spiritual things can truly satisfy you and your family. Love and trust Jesus wholeheartedly.
