The Gift of Christmas

Christmas is a happy season for several reasons: children and adults are on leave or holiday; the weather is cool (in hot Singapore), the shopping centres reverberate with nice Christmas songs. Above all, we receive gifts. This last item is the meaning of Christmas which the world appears to have correctly understood . . . or have they? Christmas is about receiving gifts. But what is this gift? It is not chocolates, a shirt, or a car. The gift of Christmas is Jesus: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Christmas is about God giving us Jesus Christ. This is the best and most precious gift. Why?

First, if you have Jesus, you have eternal life. You will one day die. Death frightens us. When we are about to die, we will ask some very important questions: Where will I go after I die? Will I go to heaven or hell? Is there heaven or hell? Dear friend, no one can answer these very important questions. When you are about to die, you will probably cry out: “I don’t want to go to hell! I want to go to heaven! How can I be 100% sure that I will enter heaven?!” No human being can give you sure answers. Only God can give you the answer. Has God provided us answers to these very important questions? We thank and praise God: God Himself has answered these questions in God’s word, the Bible: “Whoever believes in Him [Jesus] will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). You are guaranteed of eternal life and heaven.

Second, eternal life is the best gift because this life is abundant. It can truly satisfy you. Nothing in the world can satisfy you. Money, romantic love, sexual enjoyment or fame can bring you some happiness. But such happiness lasts only a little while. But if you have Jesus, you will have a full and meaning life: “I [Jesus] have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10).

Third, Jesus is the best gift because when you have Jesus, you have everything: “He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also along with Him graciously give us all things” (Romans 8:32). God has given us the most precious gift, Jesus Christ. How will He not also give us less precious gifts, for example, the things of the world, including the things necessary for survival?

Dear friend, you need Jesus because you will one day face death. But life does not end at death. Hebrews 9:27 says, “Just as people are destined to die once and after that to face judgement.” God will recall for you the sins you have committed, including the hatred or jealousy you keep in your heart, the gossips or lies you have told, and the wrong things you have done. God has reserved eternal torment in hell for sinners. The Bible clearly says, “All have sinned” (Romans 3:23) and “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). No one can save you because we are all the same: condemned. The good deeds you have done cannot save you because even the best things we do are stained by impure motives. Are we doomed for hell in eternity? We praise God. “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God” (1 Pet 3:18). Jesus has taken the punishment for your sins. Jesus says, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Let Jesus carry your burdens for you. He will because He loves you unconditionally. He can because He is the Almighty God. The Christmas gift is Jesus. Will you not open your hands to receive this gift Jesus and the gift of eternal life?
