We thank God for seeing our country through 58 years of independence. God has also given us a good government that has transformed our country from a third world to a first world country, despite us lacking natural resources. The political stability paved the way for our country to implement long term policies toward security, peace, and prosperity for our nation.
Each time when I returned from overseas , I would be thankful and grateful for the cleanliness, greenery, and the excellent infrastructure of our country. Arriving home to a world-class airport was indeed heartwarming. We should not take this for granted. There are many challenges both internally and externally facing our country. Singapore is a country small in geographical terms, and we cannot afford to take our eyes off these challenges. A small mistake can bring about catastrophic consequences, from which it would take years for us to recover.
Hence, Paul in the book of 1 Timothy instructs us to pray for all people, and especially all in authority. Again, in 1 Timothy 2:1-7, he says “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth; I am not lying—and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles.”
It is important for us to pray for our country and government so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives. This peace allows Christians to do the gospel work. Doing the gospel work is God’s desire as recorded for us in 2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” Saving souls is in the will of our LORD Jesus Christ.
What can we do?
Firstly, we can pray for the salvation of our loved ones in our church weekly prayer meeting. You can join us as we pray for them. By praying, we call on God to soften the hearts and provide opportunities for sharing the gospel. We know prayer works as we have seen many people coming to the salvation grace of our LORD and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Secondly, we can invite our friends and loved ones to our coming gospel meeting. Let us invest time and effort to engage our loved ones and friends. It could be in a form of coming together for a meal or some sports. Be on the lookout for the needs of our friends and loved ones. Offer our help and care in time of their need. You can also show care and concern by calling your friends and loved ones.
Thirdly, we must equip ourselves with the gospel to be ever ready to share. We should equip ourselves by memorising scripture and be ever ready to preach the gospel at every opportunity. There is no greater reward in doing the will of God than in the gospel work to save souls.
While we celebrate with our nation in her 58th National Day, may we rejoice with its security, peace, and prosperity. Let us continue to uphold our country in prayer. At the same time, let us be mindful to do the more important task of winning souls. May God grant us success to see our country through the difficulties facing various ministers and the Cabinet during this time. May God bless us with many more years of peace and prosperity so that we can continue to do the gospel work!
