I started having a blurred vision, myopia when I was 17. But I refused glasses and chose to squint my eyes to focus. I thought that a real man cannot put on glasses. But I did finally, and was I glad! I could see clearly again. In the same way, every human being needs a pair of spiritual glasses—God’s word—because every person is born with spiritual myopia—he is unable, because of sin, to correctly perceive things related to the spiritual realm . That includes matters pertaining to morals, psychology, the spirit world and eternal things.

Consequences of Spiritual Myopia

Is it right to tell white lies? Should a child be caned for misbehaving? Is it alright to watch movies containing some nudity? Must a wife submit to her husband or do both have equal rights? Some say a wife must stay home to take care of her child but her parents or in-laws will put up a fight to oppose such a wasteful life. In fact, almost every aspect of the human life has diametrically opposing views.

But life issues are not intellectual debates or a game. How you raise your child can build or destroy his or her adult life. The way you live can hurt you and your loved ones. The way you regard issues in life will determine your happiness. These myriad of differing views testify to a grave fact: human beings including you do not have the ability to correctly understand how to live life. For that, you will pay a heavy price, the greatest of which is to lose your soul in hell for all eternity because you are unable to correctly understand God.

Cause of Spiritual Myopia

The bible says: “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me” (Psa 51:5). That means that every aspect of our life is corrupted by sin: your emotion, intellect, and volition. Consequently,. if you are not informed and helped by God and His word, you will choose and do what is wrong and sinful. The frightening thing is this: the more abstract or spiritual the issue, the more likely you will make mistakes. That includes the mental life, moral life, family life, spiritual life—the most important issues in life.

Cure for Spiritual Myopia

You need a pair of spiritual spectacles—God’s infallible and inerrant word, the Bible. The Bible has answers for every critical life issue:

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” (2 Tim 3:16-17).

What Must You Do?

First, do not challenge God’s word. It clearly states that sin in you is making you sick and you are incapable of making right critical decisions. Do not continue to hurt yourself. You need Jesus because only He has dealt the death blow to sin on the cross of Calvary. His shed blood will wash away all your sins. He is kind and merciful and He loves you. Accept Him as your Saviour and He will take away sin and its consequences—a life of misery now and hell in future—and give you a new and eternal life. Second, study God’s word seriously and systematically. Join the Basic Bible Class to know the fundamental truths of Christianity. Your basics must be sound. Then, join the Adult Sunday School where we systematically study each book of the Bible. Be teachable and seek His word and His face diligently. Then you will find abundant life.
