First, Sunday Worship. Christians must not miss Sunday Worship. The Lord has clearly commanded us to “Remember the Sabbath Day by keeping it holy” (Exod 20:8). The “Sabbath Day” refers to Sunday. We obey the Sabbath law by “keeping it holy.” This is a day in which we put aside all work and labour to worship the Lord. By putting aside labour, we rest physically. By coming to church to worship God, we obtain spiritual rest. This rest comes from hearing the Word of God preached that brings strength to our weary souls. By fellowshipping with other Christians, words of encouragement and wisdom also strengthens our souls. This is spiritual rest. How could you say you are a Christian and yet refuse to come to church to fellowship with other Christians? In fact, God’s Word warns those who do not attend church regularly that “they went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us” (1 John 2:19). If you have little or no desire to attend church service, to fellowship with God’s people, including to care and mutually encourage each other, this may just indicate that you are not a child of God. Sunday is a day holy to the Lord. It should be spent in a holy way for the Lord as in Isa 28:13-14:
13 “If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the LORD’s holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, 14 then you will find your joy in the LORD, and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob.” For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
Second, Sunday School. This is a place where God’s children meet to fellowship over a spiritual meal. In Sunday School, we will systematically study a Biblical book (alternating between a New Testament book and an Old Testament book) or important topics such as the present course on the Westminster Confession of Faith. Here, you can ask questions and discuss and learn from other Christians.
Third, Cell Group/Fellowship. Sunday School focuses on learning God’s Word. Fellowship Groups focus on doing God’s Word. Cell group and fellowship meeting provide us more time and a more unhurried and relaxed setting where we can talk and discuss about the things that are happening in our lives. By mutual encouragement using God’s Word, we can find timely advice to navigate through trying times.
Fourth, prayer. God’s Word tells us to “pray continually” (1 Thess 5:17). Christians must be people who are often praying. We should be praying about many things: our needs, salvation of people, the church, et cetera. Do come for prayer meeting at least once a month. God’s children must be praying people.
Fifth, Quiet Time. Christians must daily read the Bible so that God can speak to you. You must respond to God after God has spoken to you by praying. Maintain these spiritual exercises. Then you will grow to become more like your Lord and Saviour.
