Scripture Memory

Computers are one of the wonders of the modern world. Just by clicking a mouse or typing on a keyboard, you can move a machine to perform your commands, control an air plane or print a document without attaching any wire. All these tasks are made possible not because of the external look of a computer but what is stored inside a computer—the software. Should the software, however, be infected by a computer virus, no matter what you do to the hardware, it just will not work. In fact, it may do things that may be harmful.

In the same way, no matter how healthy you are physically, if what is stored in your heart are things that are unclean, foolish or evil, you can be sure that you will do things that are sinful, foolish and wicked and suffer hurt. Jesus says in Luke 6:45:

A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full.

What is stored in your heart decides how you live your life. It either builds you up or it destroys you and those around you. How can a person live a life that is holy, wise and good?

The Psalmist in the Bible says: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11).

We all have our own sinful behavior and weaknesses. It can be a short temper, a tongue that likes to gossip, or it can be a heart that is easily worried or upset. You need to memorise Bible verses that address your problem. Then, in moments of weakness when you are about to behave in ways that are displeasing to God, the Holy Spirit will recall to you the Bible verse that you have memorized to stop you from sinning or direct you in the way you should walk because

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Tim 3:16-17).

The reason why God’s Word is so powerful is because it is truth and hence will direct you to walk in ways that are safe and life giving. God’s Word has also been worded in such a way that it is persuasive so that it moves your emotion to obedience. It is powerful and is capable of defeating the great adversary of our soul, Satan.

The church will embark on a scripture memory program. A person from each Adult Sunday School class will lead the memorizing of Bible verses before the start of the class. You will also pair up with somebody to recite the verse. Your responsibility as that person’s buddy is to ensure that he memorises the verse “word perfect.”

If you faithfully memorise God’s Word, you will be richly rewarded because the Word of God will direct you to live and walk in ways that are safe, wise and life giving. Hence, work hard at scripture memory.
