Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
They replied, “The Lord needs it.” They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
The crowd joyfully and spontaneously praised Jesus Christ as King for they had seen numerous miracles that Jesus Christ had performed.
Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem on a donkey. He could also have ridden a horse, a more majestic animal. Jesus Christ came as a King to bring peace and not to conquer. Therefore, a donkey, a peaceful animal, was more fitting, as compared to a horse which is ridden in battles. Jesus Christ came to restore peace, justice and righteousness upon His second coming.
Luke 19:39-44: Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” “I tell you,” He replied, “If they keep quiet, the stones will cry out. “As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”
In contrast, there is a group of people who, having seen the miracles of Jesus Christ, refused to acknowledge Jesus Christ as Messiah. This group of people will eventually perish and suffer the consequences of their unbelief.
Jesus Christ, born of a virgin, is also God’s son. He became a man and performed many miracles to authenticate that he is God in human flesh. Jesus Christ’s goal was eventually to die on the cross so that by his death, Jesus Christ will save us from our sins and free us from God’s punishment. After the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, he will then take a journey that will lead him to the cross.
Today is Palm Sunday when Jesus entered into Jerusalem triumphantly. It is also the final week before Jesus died on the cross. May we take time to reflect on God’s love and how our Lord suffered and paid the price for our sins. By Jesus Christ’s death on the cross, He has settled, once and for all, the sacrifice that is needed in God’s holiness and righteousness. It is by this very act in human history that we sinful man can be reconciled to our Holy God. On the third day after his death, God raised up Jesus Christ from the grave by His power. Jesus Christ was victorious over death. Upon his ascension, God placed Jesus Christ at his right hand. One day, Jesus Christ will return as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Hallelujah for a Risen Saviour!
