Only Sojourners

Just not too long ago, I got a new hand phone. It has a large screen. I was determined to keep it scratch-free. For that, I kept my keys in one pocket and my hand phone in the other—away from things that would scratch it. But a few days ago, during rush hour, I put my keys and my hand phone together. When I realized it, it was too late—the phone had several visible scratches. It pained my heart. A while later, whilst driving, I asked myself: “Why am I so upset?” If I were upset because I scratched someone else’s phone, it was reasonable to be upset; if I were careless, that would also be a reason because carelessness if left unchecked has grievous consequences. But if I were upset solely because the phone was scratched, that is loving the world, and the bible says: “If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15).

Only Sojourners

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed” (2 Pet 3:10). Today, no matter how good a hand phone you have, how beautiful a house you have, how wealthy you are, all that you have will all one day grow old and ugly and then pass away. Nothing in this world can bring you real joy because their lustre lasts but for a moment. In fact, even you will one day fade into history. For that reason, it is so silly to build your happiness on the things of this world. They will fail you.

A Better Hope

“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God” (Heb 11:8-10). Abraham was a millionaire on earth yet his happiness and hope were never the world. He was a wise man: he knew he was only passing by the world and was heading for an eternal home. So are you.

Do You Have an Eternal Hope?

When you step into eternity, where will you be spending eternity? If you leave the world with sin, you will perish and suffer in hell for eternity. If one can hear the voices of hell, the tormented souls in hell will shout out saying: “Don’t ever come here!” Believe in the Lord Jesus and be saved today. Today is the day of salvation. Do not say: “Maybe tomorrow” because you may not have tomorrow. Heaven, joy, peace, and an abundant life await you. Why should you be kept out of life?

Only the things done for God will last for eternity. What you do now will decide your eternal reward. Therefore, whilst you have life, whilst there is still opportunity, serve God, save souls to Christ, live for God and lay up treasures for yourselves in heaven. Then when your Saviour calls you by name into His eternal home, you will enter into God’s presence with great joy.
