Making the Most of Covid-19 Stayhome

Recently, the government provided details about the three phases of the lockdown due to Covid-19. We gather that we still need to stay home for at least several months. Let us continue to pray for our cabinet ministers that the Lord would give them good health and wisdom to navigate the nation out of difficulties, both in health matters and financial matters. For some of us, this period is a busy period: keeping restless young children occupied, cooking and washing, bearing with the discomfort of face masks, trying to live in harmony with family members, et cetera. This lockdown, however, also redeems some lost but critical opportunities. For many, of us, not needing to travel to work buys us more time. I urge you to make good use of this rare opportunity, not just to catch on physical rest, but to catch up on spiritual rest. Do the following before this lockdown time is over.

First, I wrote about maintaining regular family worship in my pastoral letter dated 24th November 2019:

Keep the family worship to not more than 13 minutes. These are several things you can do: (1) after opening in prayer, sing one or two songs. You can use songs or hymns taken from our church song books. Many of these songs can also be found on the internet. (2) Read a Bible passage and a short sharing. You can read a passage from the YouVersion phone app. The leader can then provide a short explanation and application of the passage. Alternatively, you can use materials found on the internet. One resource is “Our Daily Bread” (https://odb.org/2019/11/21/beautifully-burdened). (3) This is the most important part of the family worship: share a thanksgiving item and a prayer request. Take turns to pray for each other.

When the family comes together to seek the Lord, the presence of the Lord in the Holy Spirit will be with you. As you read His Word, share, sing, and pray for one another, the Lord will work in your hearts. Not only will he bind the family in spiritual unity, he will bind the family as a whole closer to the Lord. Then healing of the soul and comfort to your heart will flow from the Spirit of God.

Second, Sunday Worship Service, Sunday School and fellowship/cell group meetings have been brought to your door step. Unless you think that these spiritual exercises are not important for your soul, you really should attend. These spiritual exercises are not human made systems. Neither are they inventions of church leaders! Rather, they are activities instructed by God’s Word. Also, these activities must be conducted in a church setting. Christian organisations can conduct these activities. They were never, however, intended for Christian organisations for one simple reason: spiritual gifts are needed to conduct these spiritual activities. And God gives these spiritual gifts only to people in a local church. More importantly, God tailors these gifts in such a way that they function effectively in unity only for a local church. The implication is this: they are truly blessed by God and spiritually effective only when Christians attend these activities in a local church. Then we will grow spiritually to achieve godliness. And godliness is critical for your survival: “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come” (1 Tim. 4:8). I said above that these gifts are truly effective only in church. In other words, spiritual activities are effective only within Christian fellowship, that is, when Christians come together: this is the meaning of church. This means also that you cannot just attend Sunday Worship in the privacy of your room without somehow communicating with Christians in your local church. You cannot study the Bible or grow without somehow communicating with your church members. This is also why we must pray that we can meet each other physically by returning to church premises for worship and activities including Sunday School and fellowship. May you prioritise your time to attend church activities because they are God’s, and not human’s inventions. The Lord continue to watch over you and your family.
