The rise of price of water raises its value and importance to the survival and independence of Singapore. DPM sums it up, describing the water story as the story of Singapore, one written and passed down by the pioneer generation. He said: “Water is precious. Water is survival. Water is life. Water is freedom and independence. Make every drop count.”
During Jesus’ time, there was an encounter with a woman of Samaria surrounding water.
John 4:4-26: “Now he had to go through Samaria. He came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)”
The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”
Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
We are concerned about survival for this life. Water is critical to ensure survival. However, our life on earth is not forever. Soon we will all die. What is important is our spiritual life. This is an important and critical question that we need to ask ourselves. Where will I be after my life on earth? The Bible is very clear. If we die in our sins, we will be going to a place called hell. You may ask, “Then who can take away my sin and who can give me eternal life?” Jesus Christ is the Messiah. In His death, he bore our sins on the cross. At the cross, God poured his anger on His only begotten Son. Jesus Christ, who took the punishment on our behalf. When we believe in Jesus Christ as our Saviour, God will count us righteous. This is not because of how good we are but solely on the merit of Jesus Christ, God’s own Son.
Jesus Christ is the living water. When you believe in Jesus Christ, God promises that your sins will be forgiven forever. He promises that He will remember your sins no more. He promises you eternal life.
John 4:28-30; 39 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” They came out of the town and made their way toward him. Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”
The woman of Samaria found and believed in Jesus Christ as her Saviour. Through her testimony, many of the Samaritans believed. May we who have believed in Jesus Christ share our testimonies so that our loved ones and friends can likewise come to know Christ and have this eternal life.
In Jesus Christ, then, can we have this living water that will in them be a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
