We thank God for mothers for their sacrificial love for their children and family. Oftentimes, they ensure their children and family physical and emotional needs are met before self. Truly, we have many things to thank God for our mother.
A mother plays an important role not only in being the pillar in the family but also in bringing up godly children. We are reminded about the mother and grandmother of Timothy: “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also” (2 Tim 2:15).
We thank God for many godly mothers who play an important role in building godly children. Through these mothers, the church becomes vital and vibrant. When our children and their parents are godly, the church as a whole is strong.
For mothers and mothers to be, may you aspire to be the noble wife and mother as describe for us in Proverbs 31:10-31:
10A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.
19 In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. When it snows, she has no fear for her household: for all of them are clothed in scarlet. She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them and supplies the merchants with sashes.
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
27 She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
29 “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Honour her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.”
These are many ways we can show our appreciation to our mothers. During mothers’ day, may we as husbands show our appreciation by loving our wives fervently, not in words only, but in action as well. Husbands, love your wives sacrificially and always have your wives’ interests in mind when making decisions. Take your wife to a simple meal and provide a listening ear.
Ephesians 5:25-28: “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.”
And for us as children, obey and love your mum in everything, in the Lord, even though your mother may come across as naggy or being strict towards your discipline and studies. Honour your mother by being submissive, not being rebellious and causing pain and heartache for your mother but being the obedient, submissive, and loving child.
May we not only remember mother during Mother’s Day but remembering them every day of our lives. We thank God for mothers. To all mothers—Happy Mother’s Day!
