Half Time of 2017

Primary and secondary students look forward to June as it is school holidays.  They need not wake up early.  Neither do they need to rush to finish homework.  They may even travel abroad and visit places.  Nothing is more relaxing than that.  As for parents, June is more troublesome than before.  They need to plan for their children’s holidays so that the children do not waste away precious time.  Nevertheless, June signifies that half a year has almost passed by.  How have you lived in the last six months?

Regardless of the stage of life you are at, be it a student, a retiree, a working personnel, or a housewife, we should be constantly reflecting on the way we live.  A mid-year reflection is like half-time in a soccer match.  The coach or the manager will seize this opportunity to realign or strategise based on the situation in the first half of the match.  Perhaps, the plans that we set at the beginning of the year could not materialise as we would have wished because of changes in the present situation.  Shall we make fresh plans, realign the direction, or put in more effort?  Reflecting on the last half a year is imperative for a Christian: did we live well for the Lord?  Did you work hard to grow spiritually?  Moses in Psalm 90:12 says, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

As we reflect on how we have lived in the first half of this year, we must evaluate ourselves from the Bible’s perspective and God’s requirements.  In assessing our school results, do not simply focus on whether the marks have improved.  Rather, check if you have fulfilled your role as a student, if your learning attitude and relationship with others have been a good testimony.  If you have progressed at work, when you give thanks, do not forget to evaluate your working attitude as to whether or not you have been a reliable person.  See also if how you relate to people and work has left a good impression about Christians on your superiors and colleagues.  Did your family members experience God’s love through you?  Regardless of where we are and our situation, we must do our part to shine for the Lord.  “You are the light of the world.  A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.  Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matt 5:14-16).

Regarding your relationship with God, how is your Quiet Time progressing?  If you have been keeping your Quiet Time daily, is it good in terms of quality and quantity?  The church has been memorising scripture.  Do you participate in it?  How many verses can you now recite?  Do you make time to join in church activities and spiritual meetings?  When faced with temptations, do you depend on the Lord or choose to compromise and sin against God?  As for your unbelieving relatives and friends, what are your plans?  Romans 12:11 reminds us: “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervour, serving the Lord.”

The list of questions above aims simply to help brothers and sisters reflect on our progress in the last half a year.  It is not a standard checklist as our situations differ.  The emphasis, however, is clear: we must pursue spiritual progress and be a good testimony for the Lord.  If you have made good progress in certain areas, I am happy for you.  May the Lord give you strength and that you will experience God in greater measure!  If in certain areas you have not been responsible or lacked, do not be discouraged—you still have half a year to press on!  Have you encountered some difficulties, or do not know how to make the necessary adjustments?  As long as you are willing, the Lord will help you.  Brothers and sisters in the church, and teachers are willing to help you.  “Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it” (Psalm 34:14).
