Depend on God to Live

As technology advances and becomes more accessible, it has made our lives easier.  Nearly everyone in Singapore owns a hand phone, which is also a smart phone.  Thus, shopping, scheduling appointments, making bank transactions, and searching for information is done just by the touch of a finger.  Electronic data and social media have now become a part of our lives.  If these were to crash one day (e.g., the disruption caused by WanaCry software virus), how would that impact our lives?  We have, unknowingly, become dependent on internet technology  and there is no turning back.  Without technology, we can hardly carry on with our daily lives.

Come to think of it, on what are we depending to live?  Farming societies of the bygone days depend on the weather to live.  Good weather with a sufficient amount of rain will bring a bountiful harvest.  Long periods of draught will guarantee next to no crop for harvesting, which will then be followed by a famine.  Technology has enabled mankind to better manage their “fate.”  We can thus predict changes in weather, and raise crops productivity.  This will raise greatly the level of the reliability of food supply.  We depend on different types of technology in order to create a better world for us to live in.  Human beings, however, are not dependable, and neither are our inventions: they contain flaws and sometime disappoint us.

The theme for the latest set of memory verses is titled “Reliance on God’s Resources.”  This reminds us that the only one we can depend on is God alone!  “’Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty” (Zech 4:6).  When we meet difficulties and challenges in life, our first natural reaction is to tap into our or others’ past experience for a solution.  Do we first look to God for help and depend on Him to help us handle life’s problems and challenges?  What does it mean to be dependent on God?  A God dependent attitude requires one to constantly think about what the Bible instructs, and live according to its principles.  We believe that the direction God has provided in the Bible is the best.  When we in all things learn to rest our faith on God, we will obtain true peace in all of life.  “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you” (Isaiah 26:3).

A life that is dependent on God is achieved through practice.  We need to be constantly reminded, and to be steadfast in our dependence on Him.  One of the simplest and most effective way to achieve that is to memorise verses that concern dependence on God.  These 12 verses remind us of the promises God has given us: His Strength – God had given us the Holy Spirit to help us; His Power – God is almighty.  He is definitely able to help you; His Faithfulness – God is faithful and reliable.  He will deliver what is promised; His Provision – God promises to provide us our needs; His Peace – He gives us true peace that cannot be obtained from anywhere else; His Help in Temptation – God will give us victory over temptations.  I urge all brothers and sisters to spend some time to memorise these verses.  These verses will help you greatly in your spiritual growth and daily life.

“How can a young person stay on the path of purity?  By living according to your word.  I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Psalms 119:9, 11).  The Church has always been encouraging everyone to memorise Bible verses.  The objective is to help brothers and sisters-in-Christ store God’s word in the heart.  When we do that, God’s Word will be our constant reminder and guide.  God’s promises are right before you.  Live accordingly and you will be blessed.  Go for it!
